I'll always be a bookworm first, but I've also really enjoyed getting into games and gaming over the past few years. Not just video games, but also small phone games, board games and just a touch of D&D. It got me thinking about my books from a gaming perspective.
I came up with a basic outline for a Pride, Prejudice & Zombies RPG (not the Freeverse game) where you have to balance your social standing with your ability to kill zombies. For example, if you choose to train in China instead of Japan, you'd start out with greater killing skill, but a lower social standing. At the same time, if you choose to spend time gossiping or dancing, instead of reading or practicing, your social standing increases, but your killing skills decrease. Sounds rough,I know, but it's just a basic outline.
This makes me wonder, which book or series do you think would make a good game? It doesn't even have to be a video game or RPG. It can be a board game inspired by or straight out of a book. Even a card game. Just tell me the book/series, the name of the game, the type of game, and some of its rules. You don't have to flesh out the whole thing.
I do have one restriction in all of this: you cannot pick a book or series that already has a game. This means no Harry Potter, no Lord of the Rings, no Dragonriders of Pern, etc. Yes, this disqualifies my own idea, but so be it, I'm hosting. For what it's worth, I'm not going to research if the book/series you selected actually is a game.
My favorite idea will win a $15 gift card to either Amazon or Barnes & Nobles (your choice). To enter, all you need to do is tell me your idea in the comments below. You will need to leave some way (twitter handle, email address) to get a hold of you, should you win. I will leave this challenge open for the rest of the Read-A-Thon. Good luck and GAME ON!
The lunar chronicles by Marissa Meyer would make an amazing reimagined fairytale rpg game. Since I love video games and my favorite type of game is an rpg I would go with that. The series has an amazing twist and a great following so I think it would be pretty profitable with gamers that love reading. Twitter handle @Ravennessreads
ReplyDeleteI would make a video game out of WOOL, as a combination apocalyptic shoot/rpg game. I would want there to be missions where you can't get caught snooping for information on the silos, or some where you have to sabotage cleaning suits. There could also be side missions to befriend npcs to make life easier later in the game, like having a helper if you do get caught where you shouldn't be.

I think the Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks, or the entire Fitz series from Robin Hobb would make a great RPG/stealth game. I'd love to play the Night Angel Trilogy, it has such great twists, room for stealth sections, and of course the whole Night Angel thing itself, which would be a super power mode.
ReplyDeleteI think Caraval would be an intriguing tabletop RPG. I love the idea of Caraval and you could have a variety of story lines. You'd have to maybe have premade characters or possibly designed character cards and then one is randomly selected to be Legend in disguise (maybe a role card which reveal your story and then if you are Legend or not) and you'd win by not being revealed during the game if you were Legend and if you weren't your goal would be to partake in the festivities but also try to figure out which character is Legend. Sort of like Clue with Roleplaying. :)

DeleteI know we've had our fair share of Harry Potter games already, but I would LOVE a multiplayer RPG version of the Harry Potter games where you get to run around Hogwarts with your friends, perform quests, explore the magical world of Harry Potter et.c.

The Illunimae files would make an awesome game!

My almost 11-year-old has said that if he ever becomes a game designer he'll make me a game encompassing all of the Jane Austen books but set up like my beloved Sims games so I can control who ends up with whom ... even if they're from different books. I tried telling him I could just create the characters in Sims & he said it wasn't the 1800s OR England in SimTown ;) (I asked if Zombies would be included and he said it could be a booster pack or a ComiCon exclusive. LOL) Twitter : @wellreadpirate
ReplyDeleteFABLEHAVEN!!! It would make such an excellent Lego video game! I love the Harry Potter and LOTR ones and I love Fablehaven soooo much but it's so underrated! As a five-book series there would totally be enough stuff for various levels and I'd love seeing the preserves in game form!

Also - this isn't a real suggestion, but I can't even imagine House of Leaves as a video game. Endless labyrinth opens up in someone's house and everything is scary and super puzzling? Would be intriguing but no thanks! Only thought of this because I'm currently reading it, haven't finished yet!
Black Dagger Brotherhood could be a neat co-op board game! Each Brother has a strength and weakness, there's a common enemy, and humans constantly throw wrenches in plans.

Percy Jackson would be a cool RPG like Kingdom Hearts. You could play as Percy, Annabeth, or Grover and fight some of the monsters like Medusa or the chimaera.
ReplyDeleteThe Redwall Series would be such a fun game! Adventure, battles, villains, and adorable animal warriors. Twitter/Instagram: @xandraj09
ReplyDeleteI think I would make a game out of the book I finished today, Day By Day Armageddon by J.L. Bourne. I'm not a gamer so it's hard to explain, but I would make it sort of like the original Resident Evil on Play Station. You'd be a survivor and you'd have to go on missions for rations, or a new place to hold up, battle the walking dead, or people. And you'd have companions that you'd meet along the way to help you. Everything would be based on the day's journal entry like in the book. I don't know if this makes sense, but it would make a cool game.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't think I could ever outdo the Les Miserables fighting game. (Which I keep trying to link, but I think I'm not allowed? I keep getting glitches when I try to post.)
ReplyDeleteThat said, a video game for the Chronicles of Chrestomanci where you have to travel between all the universes and deal with magical squabbles would be really fun. You'd have to problem-solve and battle evil, all while making sure you follow the "rules" of each parallel universe. There could be an overarching plot of some miscreant doing evil throughout the worlds (a la the smuggling ring in The Lives of Christopher Chant or someone stealing enchanter lives like in Stealer of Souls). Of course, you'd only have 9 lives of your own to burn through...

I love this challenge! I would make The Shades of Magic series by V. E. Schwab into a video game RPG. I would maybe have the playable character be a commoner from one of the Londons (different origin stories & skills based on the different Londons--you get to choose!) who gets swept up on an adventure with Kell & Lilah, perhaps the adventures from the books, but maybe just another random adventure at some other time. I like the idea of the story existing on the periphery of what we already know and expanding the universe in that way, and I'm always a big proponent of choice mattering, so a new adventure would allow the player to shape the world, whereas just following the books would not allow as much expansion. If only someone would make this happen...
ReplyDeleteYou can find me on Twitter @reviewsandRaTs.
I think the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson would make an excellent game. It has a mix of action and socialization that would appeal to all gamers. We could play as any of the flock and fight to escape the school.
ReplyDeleteThe Voyage of the Dawn Treader would make an excellent game. It has a lot of action with tons of different locations that would make the perfect different levels.
ReplyDeleteI think Ready Player One would make a perfect arcade style video game! The game could build on the game that's already created in the book where you need to use 80's pop culture to find keys and ultimately the Easter egg. There could be additional levels that draw from 80's pop culture that aren't in the book, so that the book doesn't contain all the game solutions. And just like in the book, there could be a pacman mini game to give you an extra life!
ReplyDeleteInstagram @thecolorsofwords
I think The Night Circus would make a fantastic pen & paper RPG over even RPG video game. The world is wonderfully lush and it would give even more of a peek into the world of the circus. (twitter @mustbinsane)
ReplyDeleteI think a board game, akin to Risk, based on The Count of Monte Cristo where players try to amass a fortune, while revenging themselves on each other.
ReplyDeleteShopaholic series. Shopaholic vs Malls of the World. A video game. The Shopaholic must find the best price for each item of on a list in the allotted period of time to get more money and level up!
ReplyDelete#clizzyb2006 on twitter
Murder on the Orient Express. Clue style game where you have to pass through the train in a linear fashion. Players have to solve the murder and reach the end of the train game board before the snow drifts are cleared and the journey continues. (Twitter @rob_nunn)
ReplyDeleteI was trying to think of something Christie-ish.
DeleteOk so even though I am reading JD Robb series. I love series books. Christine Feehan books would be great as a game. I am not talking about the Carpathian series. Sure Vampires are fun to play with but it has been done. I am talking about the Game series.
ReplyDeleteWhere military has been given a boost in psych powers. I think it would be a great game. All the missions. Gathering everyone that is like you together. And you could play either male or female and each has its own challenges and benefits. Also are you planning rogue or government. So many choices to make
I would play a game based on The Shadow of the Wind. The Cemetery of Lost Books would be a live action mystery game where teams would scatter clues around their community and with community members. No GPS, smartphone apps. Old fashioned sleuthing skills only. The goal: find the lost book!

I could totally jump on The Lunar Chronicles...fairy tales plus space...#yesplease!
ReplyDeleteBut also, The Selection Series could be fun from epic makeovers to brutal girl fights to rebellion against the castle!

Percy Jackson was my first thought, probably because I am readings book by Rick Riordan. However, since Sammantha already suggested it, I'll pick Stardust by Neil Gaiman. It would make an awesome quest game - get past the guards to leave the town of Wall and enter Faerie. Outsmart witches, rescue the girl, fight would-be assassins, fly in a sky ship, and become the new King of Stormhold.
ReplyDeleteI would make a board game based on Octavia Butler's Wild Seed. It would be a two players/teams game, in which, Anyanwu's character would be pursuing freedom while Doro's character would be pursuing her. It would be a game of wit and strategy as both characters rely on their abilities and skills to outsmart each other.

This has been said already but it was the first thing that came into my head because it is absolutely the BEST option and I'll tell you why and what my ideas are...the Lunar Chronicles! The series is set up PERFECTLY for a video game. You start off as Cinder with Iko as your sidekick. You're on Earth and you have the perfect set of goals (you're in the market...then the house...then you have to get into the palace and save Kai...then get past Levana). So then next up of course you play with Scarlet and Wolf and of course you are building your skills of mechanics (Cinder), combat (Wolf), shooting (Scarlet), etc. And so on through the series. You can pick up items like cures and ships, travel to different locations like the commonwealth, the palace on the Moon, level up skills, and play between different characters for tons of missions....seriously....PERFECT game. I need to make this happen. All these ideas are copyrighted! I'm making this happen! :D
ReplyDeleteI was so excited typing that (and I told my fiance who is a computer junkie) that I forgot to add my contact. Twitter: @SingerMezzo ... Email: SmileyStar5241@aol.com
DeleteThe School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani would make a really cool RPG. You can choose to be either good or evil and then work your way through challenges trying to be the Prince(ess) after the four years of school (IRL it could be four days or weeks of game play or however long someone wants). If you choose the easy level, you're already the prince(ess) and the challenges aren't as hard. If you choose the medium level, you're not the prince(ess) but the challenges are at a good difficulty level. If you choose hard, then you REALLY need to work to be the prince(ess). The game play can increase in customizablitity as the difficulty level increases. When you beat the game, it tells you the fairy tale that came out of it and you can see what happens to all the characters and whether or not you became the protagonist! I would play this game. I feel sad now bc I want to play it but it doesn't exist.
ReplyDeleteIn all the excitement I almost forgot to write my info.

The 100 series would be great. Anything post-apocalyptic. @artandquirks on Instagram.
ReplyDeleteI love board games but I don't get to play them as often as I would like. I think Attack on Titan would make a fun game.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see my all-time favorite Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich be turned into either a trivia game, or scene it game...maybe even a SIM type of reality game for Playstation where I could be the main character Stephanie Plum and go out on different bounty hunter excursions. It would have difderent scenarios where I would have to figure out the crimes. It would have a romance angle as well and I would get to decide whether to be with Joe Morelli or Ranger for a night, maybe forever. I would get to pick the storyline as I go. Maybe I would go out on a stakeout with the Lula, or cruising for criminal with Grandma Mazur. It would be non-stop scenarios and hours of entertainment. My twitter handle is @banterbooks and my username on Instagram is @bookaholic_banter
ReplyDeleteHarry Potter would make a great game. They have a lot of nice scenery and such. It would be neat to do a Sims type version where you level in spells, choose classes, and advance in life.
ReplyDeleteI think a Simms style game in the world of Written in Red (The Others) by Anne Bishop would be fascinating
ReplyDeleteOr a LARP in the world of Sherrie Tepper's The True Game series

Jane Austen already has an MMO, so why stop there? How about a Dresden Universe MMO? It has a tabletop RPG, but the MMORPG genre is sorely in need of a paranormal dark fantasy entry, so I think it'd be a perfect fit.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, but a quick google tells me that someone actually gave that a loose whirl in 2007. (Still, influenced by and adaptation of aren't the same thing, right?)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think Pierce Brown's Red Rising series has more than enough world building in it to house either a video game (Darrow's path is already a space quest), or a RPG. Play as a Red! As a Pink! Whatever you want! Join forces to bring down the Golds!
I'm tweeting #readathon @stiricide, or email stiricide at gmail dot com
I think 13 reasons why would make a great game. It would be called 13 reasons why and it would be a video game. The objective would be to not kill yourself as Hannah Baker and to stir away from any bullying and stir away from the hateful people.
ReplyDeleteI actually own some games based on books. A Song of Ice and Fire (Game called the Iron Throne), Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Inkworld, Around the world in 80 days, Mara und der Feuerbringer, all board games. And of course I played the Harry Potter computer games. Well, first and second year.
ReplyDeleteBut I would think Charlie Holmberg's Paper Magician would make a good video game, just like Harry Potter. Both action and learning parts for her, like Harry had to practice spells. Would be kinda cool.
Twitter: @zwiebelbaguette.
I would love to get my hands on an 'around the world in 80 days' board game. The board is basically a map of the world and u have to make your way around it, by answering questions and fulfilling tasks, while at the same time making sure your money does not run out. It would be a great mix of strategy game, quiz and race game.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have the graphic novels SAGA (the combined world of all of the volumes) to be combined into some sort of virtual reality or video game to explore-I know that would be extremely complex, however I can't help thinking about how cool and insightful it would be to explore this awesome world!
ReplyDeleteTwitter: @Mars_acearo
The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo would make an interesting action rpg. It could play like Dragon Age: Inquisition with teams made up of the character you create and different grisha, soldiers, and so on which are interchanged depending on the different missions you undertake and the different enemies you face (i.e. Shu Han, Fjerda, corrupt grisha and soldiers, thieves, Volcra, wild animals, etc.). Limitations of powers and abilities would be confined the bounds of the series (light vs darkness, etc.).
ReplyDeleteWhatever missions you take on and items you collect (i.e. amplifiers w/ their specific strengths and restrictions, how rare or common they are, etc.) boost your stats accordingly. Various decisions you make in the game will effect your storyline. I guess you could call it The Grishaverse (or The Grisha).
Sounds pretty cool. I'd play that game. ^_^
Twitter: @absolutebookish
The Hungergames would be a cool online RPG where you get to choose which character to start out with, and depending on which district they're from they've got different talents that will help them survive in the Arena. There would be the broadcasted interviews where you could win sponsors and become more/less liked by the other players, and the training center would be the "How to play" sequence of the game!
ReplyDeleteAnd when you're in the arena you can form alliances, use your special skill from your district to find shelter or food, or just go on a rampage and try to win the game!
Twitter: @magicallybane
I think The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay could be an awesome RPG in the vein of the Assassin's Creed series - a little bit of adventure, a little bit of magic, strong male and female characters to play as. You could have skills to improve so you could fight better, and several locations to move through as you explore the world.
ReplyDeleteelischulenburg@gmail.com
The Dark Tower by Stephen King...you have a 7 book series to pull from. 4 main characters, so you can choose a character and story line, or play multiple players. You would travel between different times, following the story in the books. The beautiful graphics would make the game! It would be a combination of action/adventure, with some puzzles and strategy thrown in. I could see this working as a very simple PC game or as something almost as detailed as World of Warcraft.

Graceling by Kristin Kashore would make a great adventure video game, something like what I'd seen Assassin's Creed to be!
