Dewey's Read-A-Thon Mini-Challenge - You're Wearing That?

Image result for bookish outfits

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not that crazy about clothes. Does it fit? Yes. Is it comfortable? Yes. Then I'll buy it (give or take). Though I do often have a weakness for funny or bookish t-shirts and dark denim jeans. Other than that, I really don't care about clothes, especially fancy dresses.

With one exception.

Image result for elvenborn

In the book Elvenborn, Lady Lydiell shows up to a dinner wearing a dress that, at first glance looks like a simple sparkly, silver dress. Upon closer inspection, however, the dress is show to be made of chain mail with tiny plates hosting tiny diamonds. It was so well crafted another character wonders if it could turn a blade. The only fancy/pretty dress I will ever truly want.

In terms of more practical clothing, I love the armor from Jay Posey's Outriders. That stuff is so responsive and lightweight the main character feels it's like a second skin. At the same time, it's stronger than most futuristic bullets, can survive in low atmosphere, has food(ish) & water available, and has the ability to sense the coloration of its environment and adjust its camouflage accordingly! Tell me that wouldn't be cool to wear!

This gets me thinking: have you ever read about an outfit that you would want for yourself? Not just an accessory (i.e. an invisibility cloak) but a full outfit.

In the comments section, let me know the clothing, the book it's from and why you want it. This is a free-for-all, no restrictions on genre, magical or not, etc. The description and reason for wanting it that I like the most wins a $15 gift card to either Amazon or Barnes & Nobles (winner's choice). Please also make sure you leave a way to get a hold of you. A twitter handle or an email address (i.e. username   @   domain   .   com). I'll even give you 3 hours to enter!

In Geekerella, Elle ends up wearing the most fabulous cosplay dress. If I remember correctly, the author describes it as the other side of the universe, which I imagined to be like The Night Court in dress form.

  2. Off the top of my head? Alice in Wonderland's dress. Cute AF.

  3. That's a hard one. I'll go with just about any of the Elite series dresses of the candidates for the queen. The dresses sound beautiful and amazing, I have no occasion I can think of to wear one for but oh they sounds gorgeous! They even look amazing in the covers of all the books. If I had to choose one I'd go with America's wedding dress.

  4. Anna Karenina's black dress, of course! The one she wears while she waltzes scandalously with Count Vronsky. I want it because it's devastatingly simple, stands out in a crowd of forgettable frills, and alters Anna's life forever (although, unfortunately, for the worse in this case).

  5. I would wear Alina's Grisha robes from the Grisha Trilogies by Leigh Bardugo.
They are made from the best materials (thanks to the fabrikators), have fancy intricate detailing, and I am sure the robes are comfy! (Also, habing a Grisha robe would mean I probably have some awesome powers!)

  6. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for the Yule Ball Hermione ...wore dress robes made of a floaty, periwinkle-blue material, and her usually bushy hair was made sleek and shiny by Sleekeazy's Hair Potion, and twisted up into an elegant knot at the back of her head.

One of my favorite colors is Periwinkle-blue. I do not wear dresses, however, this one sounds fantastic, especially since she gets a lot of attention. I, also, always wear my hair down with no flare. I just let it dry and whatever it does is the way it stays. So I little up-do would be simple and fantastic.

It helps that I am a Potterhead and obsessed with this world!

  7. Kell's coat from the Shades of Magic series because it has so many amazing pockets. You could carry and hide so many books and other necessary things. Also, I've heard the author of the series describe it as the Room of Requirement from Harry Potter in coat form. My Twitter handle is @reviewsandRaTs.

  8. Faith’s superhero outfit, because she is the first fat superhero I can recall having her own comic book series so she’s the first opportunity us gorgeous fat girls have to have a superhero costume from a superhero who looks like us.

  9. I’d want one of Eliza Braun’s outfits from the Ministry of Peculiar Occurances series. She always wears a steampunk inspired getup complete with leather corsets and an arsenal of weapons hidden throughout. She’s a true badass, brilliant, and beautiful.

  10. Any of Claire's outfits in Outlander, well during the period she was in Scotland. My hubby is from Scotland, directly, grew up there. Would love to dress up and get his Scottish blood flowing

  11. I never have the opportunity to wear ball gowns, so I am always jealous of Ella's final dress in Ella Enchanted. "My gown for the last ball was my favorite: white, with a low neckline edged in lace. The skirt parted in the front to reveal a petticoat with three lace flounces. In back, my skirt was tied with a large bow that flowed into the graceful sweep of my train." All of that combined with a tiara of woven silver leaves? I'll take it!

  12. Oh, this one's really gotten me thinking. I'd like to go with the Artemis Fowl series. It's been a while since I read it so I don't remember it super clearly but the main fairy, Holly, gets some super intense, SWAT gear when she and Artemis join forces. I loved it because on the surface it's almost ridiculously funny but I'm sure she would be quite a terrifying sight and I'd definitely put money on her in a fight (now I'm just rhyming). As for wearing that army gear myself, you wouldn't want to join an army of fairies?!

  14. Since the very first time I read Wizard's First Rule, I have wished for the Mother Confessor's dress. Pure white with a square collar, made of a silky, satiny material that slithers and swishes. I love it because it is exquisite in its simplicity, and because of what it represents: the power of the woman wearing it. Who she is, what she is capable of, is so strong that a simple, stark white gown is sufficient to adorn her. Every time I read the books in that series, I wish I had even one article of clothing where when people look at it, they see ME, and not a stylish outfit.

  16. Hmm, this one is a hard one for me. I have a tendency to overlook what the characters are wearing (guilty sweats). My first thought is Yelena's cloak in the Poison Study series because it protects her like a shield does. I like functional fashion haha.

  17. It's a vain daydream, but I choose Scarlett O'Hara's beautiful and mildly inappropriate barbecue dress from the beginning of Gone With The Wind. Made of green sprigged muslin and "not suitable for a barbecue, for it had only tiny puffed sleeves and the neck was low enough for a dancing dress," it's the outfit I'd most want to wear because it's the most outlandish thing I can think of. I am the opposite of Scarlett in almost every way - shy, introverted, empathetic, etc. - but I harbor a secret desire to be the belle of the ball in a dress only I would dare get away with, a dress designed to make everyone flock to me or jealous of me. Plus the huge skirts and delicate bodices of Civil War era dresses have a certain charm to them. They're so ridiculous, I'd love to wear one just once!

  18. I'm going to be tricky and say all of the things they describe Anne Boleyn wearing in all of the many many books focused on her. Does that count? I loooove all the descriptions of period clothing.

I was trying to remember who gave the best really lush descriptions of clothing and actually discovered an entire book that describes her clothing so you've added to my to-read list with a book I didn't even know existed.

Inside the Wardrobe of Anne Boleyn
    by Barbara Parker Bell

Specifically I have a replica of her "B" pearl necklace (I didn't have a B in my name then, haha, but I do a decade later). I have photos of me done with that necklace and a replica of a specific headpiece but I don't want to disturb the pug that is sleeping on me. I'll fetch it when he moves if anyone is interested. :)

  20. The dress Katniss spins in in the first Hunger Games book. The description of the flames surrounding her sounded amazing and a little frightening. It would certainly make a statement as you entered a room. @world4anna

  21. I've always loved Anne Rice's descriptions of Lestat's clothes in her Vampire Chronicles. So, even though I'm not a guy, those are the clothes I would wear, especially those that he wore in the 18th and 19th centuries, although his rock star clothing also sounded pretty cool. I always think of Lestat as androgynous anyway so I think it would work out fine. lol

Great challenge! Thanks! truebookaddict AT gmail DOT com

I've always admired the outfit descriptions for Rose Hathaway of the Vampire Academy series. I would particularly love her black dress from the Equinox Dance - I feel powerful and confident when I'm wearing bold, striking clothing, and that dress covers those bases. It's described as, "...the kind of dress that changed the world. The kind of dress that started religions." YES, please!

  24. In Death by Madhuri Pavamani, Juma is pleasantly surprised at her love's thoughtfulness as he stocked up his closet with items he noticed she liked, including bras from Target, a FEMINIST AS FUCK tee-shirt, black cargo pants, and PF Flyers. My reason for liking the outfit is that sense of a partner's consideration, attention to detail, and acceptance of one's style, which I would happily wear!

  30. Several times throughout the Guards-centered Discworld novels (Terry Pratchett), Vimes’ “Boots Theory of Economic Injustice” is mentioned. Basically, if you can afford to spend the money on a good pair of boots up front, they’ll last ages but if you have to buy cheap ones, they’ll wear out quicker and you’ll spend more money replacing them multiple times than you’d have spent on the total cost of the good boots to start with. The trick, of course, is just having the money up front. I want, and have always wanted, a pair of those REALLY GOOD BOOTS.

  31. In Diabolic they have these weird exo-skeletons on just to be strong enough to wear their big and dramatic dresses. They can wear gold, galaxies and all sorts of crazy things. The main character at some point wears a dress which is described as if she is wearing the sun itself, and I just imagine how she brightens the room. The picture never really left me, and I've been dying for a Diabolic movie, just so the dresses wont just be in my imagination. I simply chose this outfit because I couldn't get it out of my head, and when something sticks with you for several months it tends to be important.

The one outfit I read about and has been stuck in my head has been Hermione's ball robe. Being a Ravenclaw myself, the blue festive robes seemed ideal. And it's not a dress, they're ROBES. MAGICAL. Ugh.
