Top Ten Funny Sci-Fi Movies | Sci-Fi Month

Last week I posted about 10 Scary Sci-Fi movies. Today, I'm going to list 10 Sci-Fi movies that made me laugh, whether they intended to be funny or not. I have to admit, it was a LOT more difficult to find funny sci-fi movies than scary ones, so some of these may be a bit of a stretch.

1. Evolution: I feel like this movie doesn't get as much credit as it should have. My family watched this in theaters and had a great time. I do wish they had gone with the alternate ending, though.

2. Men In Black: As a kid, this was one of the very few alien movies that I could watch without getting scared. 

3. Eight Legged Freaks: This is a movie you have to go into with absolutely zero expectations in order to have a good time. But it is still a good time. ^_^

4. They Live: I don't know if the creators of this movie intended for it to be so funny, but I had a great laugh.

5. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure: There may be some who argue that this isn't Sci-Fi, but the time-travel alone makes it count for me.

6. Wall-E: Okay, yeah, this is more "cute" than "funny", but I'm still counting it.

7. Weird Science: This is a more recent watch for me, but the humor in this seems to be ageless. 

8. Serenity: Again, probably not the first thing you think of for a "funny" Sci-Fi Movie, but Serenity (and Firefly) wouldn't be what they are without their strong sense of humor.

9. The World's End: Again, a more recent watch, but so much fun. I appreciate movies where you can tell the actors had fun making the movie.

10. Ghostbusters: I feel like this is an iconic Funny Sci-Fi Movie. In so many ways, this movie set the standard for those that came after.

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Fictional Places to Live

So, I haven't been tagged in this, but I figured, why not give it a try? Basically, these are the Top Ten fictional places I wish were real and I could live in.*

1. Xanth



Don't be fooled by the fact that it looks a lot like Florida. Xanth is a land magic, puns and magical puns. There are dangers, of course. Dragons, Love Springs, Hate Springs, Nickelpedes, etc. But if you keep to the secured paths, you'll be safe. Heck, you'll have problems going hungry in a place where you can get steak and pasta from the trees! I'd love to live in Xanth as long as I got to have my own magical talent. I may have to visit Good Magician Humphrey to figure out how to get one...



2. Pern



I "discovered" Pern before any other fantasy world. I have dreamed of being a Dragon Rider, or at least having my own pet Fire Lizard since. Yes, there are politics to deal with, and dangerous thread organisms falling from the sky now and then, but c'mon, DRAGONS!!!!!!


3. Avalon (as depicted by Gargoyles)

 

This one may seem strange to some, but my favorite interpretation of Avalon was from the cartoon show, Gargoyles. It is run by Lord Oberon and his wife Titania. Admittedly Lord Oberon would probably not welcome more humans to his island, but I would appreciate aging at a MUCH slower pace. But the main reason I would love to be in Avalon, is for when I have to leave. Because Avalon does not let you go where you want, it takes you where you need to be.


4. Fairy World (as depicted by Fairly Odd Parents)



Again, this one may seem strange, but I would love to be surrounded by such positive magic. Most importantly, I would be happy to be a Fairy Godparent who helps kids out every day. Though it would be difficult, on some occasions, to not be able to work with the parents on the child's needs. At least I could help the kids.


5. Skyrim



Okay, I'll admit. I just want to be in Skyrim because magic and fighting come so easily to people. If I could train as quickly as I can in video game time, I would become the strongest citizen in all of Skyrim, maybe even Tamriel!


Well, I know this isn't a full list, but it's really all I can think of right now. As strange is it may seem, these are my top 5 fantasy places. Maybe I should stretch a little further into the fantasy realm to get more ideas.



*Apparently I'm one of the few that's good without Hogwarts...

Top Ten Tuesdays

Hello Everyone! I've been seeing a few Top Ten Tuesdays lately and decided I'd try to join in as well. Today's Top Ten is TV Shows and Movies. I'm opting to go with my Top Ten Netflix choices. There are the ten movies/shows I always go to when I'm not looking for something new.

1) The Finder

Starring Geoff Stults and Michael Clarke Duncan The Finder is a short-lived series about Walter (Stults) who suffers a head injury in Afghanistan and wakes up with an incredible ability to find things people have considered lost forever. With his friend Leo (Duncan) to help him out, Walter is able to find people, food, even conversations. The reason I fell in love with this show is because of it's humor and charm. It's easy to laugh at and is a lot more fun for people who love crime shows, but hate blood and medical gore. Unfortunately, because the series was not given a second season, the last episode of the series will leave you feeling upset, sad, and even angrier at Fox. Avoid this episode, but revel in the others.

2) The Naked Gun

I have been watching this movie regularly for at least 20 years and I will never tire of it. It has the kind of silliness that is perfect for all ages, even if, as a kid, you don't get why it's so funnier to the adults. Leslie Nielsen plays a detective in Police Squad who upholds the law above all else, including common sense. The man makes so many bumbles it's amazing he hasn't died yet. Which is probably why it's still so funny. Everyone needs a nonsense funny every now and then. 

3) Leverage

Every episode feels like an amazing combination of Oceans 11 and Now You See Me. There is no episode where everything goes as planned and no episode where I can predict what's going happen. Watching the scenes about how they pull of their scams for the good of others is always a delightful treat! I'm still working on finishing season 2, but I'm having a lot of fun!

4) Numbers

I had watched a few episodes of this show before Netflix existed and I enjoyed it. With all of the episodes on Netflix, I am able to watch everything. I originally watched it on Netflix with my husband because he's such a math nut and was looking for something different. We now watch it with my brother-in-law while we eat dinner. We're just now getting to the last season and looking forward to seeing more ways math affects our lives. It's actually pretty funny to see all the ways math can and does affect us. It's even changed up how I see where I sit on the bus!

5) Phineas & Ferb

Okay, I'll admit, I do watch this more for Dr. Doofenshmirtz than I do the title characters. But can you blame me? The man is friggin' hilarious! It's why I'm subscribed to his YouTube channel! Though I do wish he'd put up more videos, I understand how his schedule is probably too busy. I also encourage people with kids to watch the show. It's always encouraging of creativity, curiosity, discovery, etc. And who doesn't love a secret agent platypus?

6) Airplane!

Yes, this is another Leslie Nielsen movie, but I don't see anything wrong with that. This is another zany comedy where nothing has to make sense and the puns never stop. It has my favorite interpretation of a drinking problem.

7) Futurama 

I have to admit, this show is mainly on here because of nostalgia. This was one of  the last TV series my family sat down to watch together before I went off to college and my dad had to go into a nursing home. I still find it funny and it a show that always there for me during college.

8) Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy

Two little kids trick the Grim Reaper into being their best friend forever. The levels of insanity and silliness in this show reach near critical levels and I love it. I only wish they'd have the Christmas movie and the crossover with the Kids Next Door movie! I WANT MY CROSSOVER!

9) Sherlock

Do I even need to say why this show is so awesome?

10) Scrubs

I actually learned the hard way to never watch this show with a Medical or Pre-Med student. But, if you're ignorant of proper hospital procedure, like me, I think you'll enjoy how human these characters are. The show is almost completely character driven and that's probably why it's so easy to get carried up in their emotions, their stories, etc.
