Dewey Mini-Challenge: A Mad Tea Party

We're All Mad Here

Greetings dear Readathoners,
And welcome to my party.
Worry not about manners,
And be sure to eat hearty.

All of you are my great guests,
I hope you enjoy the tea.
But, pray, I must now ask you,
Who would your party guests be?

Which character you have read,
Is as mad as the March Hare?
Who is mad enough to host,
This completely mad affair.

Which character you have read,
Resembles the Mad Hatter?
Who argues that Time is wrong,
And gets trapped in the matter.

Which character you have read,
Is sleepy as the Dormouse?
Who has stories to tell you,
But is difficult to rouse.

Which character you have read,
Is out of place, like Alice?
Who does not know where she is,
But treats it not with malice.

I pray, dear Readathoner,
Tell me whom you would invite.
Match your characters to these,
And in the comments please write.

Should your Tea Party amuse,
You shall surely win the prize.
It need not be in verse form,
It just has to catch the eyes.

A gift from the Amazon,
Or from the Noblest of Barns.
The choice shall be yours to make,
O teller of the best yarns.

Welcome to my Tea Party,
All my Readathoners, dear.
I do hope this is funny,
And know that, we're all mad here.

Translation:

Hello everyone! I'm happy to be hosting another mini-challenge and I'm so glad to see so many of you here. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to tell me in the comments below about characters that you have read that you would invite to play the roles of the characters from the Mad Tea Party scene in Alice in Wonderland

First, there's the March Hare who is host of the party. What mad character do you know who is mad enough to host a tea party that never ends? Or just loves tea that much and is willing to invite other mad people?

Next, of course, is the Mad Hatter. Which character have you read about that fights the clock (i.e. aging, scheduling, bombs) and can't escape?

Thirdly, the Dormouse. Pick a character that you know that is generally quiet, or sleepy, but once they get to talk, they have a great story.

Finally, we have to have an Alice. What character have you read that finds themselves completely out of place, surrounded by a world they know nothing about, but just goes with it. A fish out of water that hit the ground running, so to speak.

Your answers do NOT have to be in verse. I just did that as a challenge to myself. I'm going to let this contest run for the next 3 hours. Winner gets a $20 gift card to either Amazon or Barnes & Noble's (your choice). I can't wait to read your responses and get to know some characters!

  5. 1. Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter. She is so crazy, I could just see her hosting a tea party from hell where the guests can never leave. Her general attire also fits in with what I would imagine people would wear to a fancy tea party.

    2. Tessa from the Infernal Devices. She ends up fighting aging and lives on even after those she has loved have died.

    3. I know I already used the Harry Potter series but I have to say Neville Longbottom for this one. He starts off pretty quiet and insecure and then his character just blossoms throughout the series when we learn more about his backstory and when he finally steps out of his shell at the end of the series and becomes a true hero.

    4. Kahlen from The Siren. I just finished this book tonight. Kahlen is ripped from the human world and transformed into a siren of the sea without knowing anything about her new "role" in the ocean.

  6. I am reading the PERFECT book series for this: Pretty Little Liars!

First, there's the March Hare who is host of the party. What mad character do you know who is mad enough to host a tea party that never ends? Or just loves tea that much and is willing to invite other mad people? Hanna Marin! Hanna dreamed of being the It girl when she was younger. She loves glamour and definitely parties. She is the perfect host for this.

Next, of course, is the Mad Hatter. Which character have you read about that fights the clock (i.e. aging, scheduling, bombs) and can't escape? Spencer Hastings! Spencer is an overachiever! She is always running around participating in this or that. She's a fighter, against her friend Ali and against her sister, and in this book series there are bombs constantly dropping.

Thirdly, the Dormouse. Pick a character that you know that is generally quiet, or sleepy, but once they get to talk, they have a great story. Emily Fields! She's the sweet one that, once you get to know, has the most emotional and human story. In this book series, she is exploring her sexuality and coming to terms with the fact that she's gay. It might be my favorite part of the series.

Finally, we have to have an Alice. What character have you read that finds themselves completely out of place, surrounded by a world they know nothing about, but just goes with it. A fish out of water that hit the ground running, so to speak. Aria Montgomery! I'm choosing Aria for this because she's the granola kid. She knit her own bras when she was younger. She dates her teacher (to be fair, she didn't know he was her teacher). She seems to be just a little stranger the the other girls.

  7. March Hare: Des Tiny from the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan
Mad Hatter: The Giver from The Giver by Lois Lowry
Dormouse: Melinda Sordino from Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Alice: Drizzt DoUrden from the Forgotten Realms series by R.A. Salvatore

  8. For the March Hare, Ripley from the Lumberjanes comics has enough crazy energy and comes up with enough hijinks to host the party. My Mad Hatter would be Bran (Robin Hood) from the King Raven trilogy, whose always fighting time to have his plans ready to attack the oppressors of his people. My Dormouse would be Sleeping Beauty for obvious reasons. Finally, my Alice would be Mark Watney from the Martian who plans to survive his planet wasteland of Mars immediately after realizing he's been left.

  9. HA! This is great! I just finished The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater, so here's my list:

March Hare - this would be Ronan. He's the guy who is crazy enough to just keep on going when something is super fun or right. He'll host them all at the Barns, thank you very much.

Mad Hatter - Gansey. His death has been foretold, so he's always kind of lying in perpetual wait.

Dormouse - Adam - not exactly quiet, but definitely the most reserved of the Raven Boys. His story and development are great.

Alice - OBVIOUSLY Blue. She feels out of place everywhere, was kind of dropped into the Raven Boys story, but somehow, as they get to know her, she belongs.

    Thanks for this awesome challenge!

  10. Here are my selections!

March Hare: Tia Lola from How Tia Lola Came to Stay
Mad Hatter: Coralis from Wandmaker by Ed Masessa
Dormouse: Mumfrey from Hamster Princess by Ursula Vernon
Alice: Harriet Hamsterbone from Hamster Princess by Ursula Vernon

  11. I've been reading through the Chronicles of Narnia lately so here is my cast of wacky tea party goers.
    March Hare- Chief Dufflepud
    Mad Hatter- White Witch
    Dormouse- Bulgy Bear
    Alice- Lucy

    ReplyDelete
  12. March Hare - Zloty from "The Pickle Index" (crazy ringmaster and clown for an absurd circus)
Mad Hatter - Janice Neismith from "The Child Garden" (definitely a malevolent Mad Hatter)
Dormouse - Leo/Steppa from "Room" (he's so sweet and such a minor character, but I loved all the sections with him)
Alice - Flora from "The Pickle Index" (definitely the Alice of that story, though she becomes more integrated into the world as it goes on)

  13. March Hare who is host of the party. I would have Ingrid (from White Oleander) for she is completely mad and may use the party as an opportunity to poison her guests.

Mad Hatter. Peter Pan, for he refuses to age and will never grow up.

The Dormouse. Grandpa Portman from Miss Peregrine's Home for Unusual Children. He is paranoid and delusional but there is truth behind his stories.

Alice. Astrid (From White Oleander). Astrid has been placed in many foster homes where she had to try and find her place and fit into her surroundings. Each home was so different, it was like being in another world that couldn't be real.

  14. March Hare - I'm reaching here...Anastasia from "Fifty SHades of Grey" sereis loves tea, and bites her lip when she feels uncomfortable. She's maybe a little crazy for complying with Christian Grey's Sexy lifestyle... But, I still love her.
Mad Hatter - Alice from "Still Alice" by Lisa Genova who is fighting against her own memory loss as she struggles with her Alzheimer's diagnosis. Such a tragic, yet important story.
Dormouse - Margo Roth Speigelman, from "Paper Towns" by John Green who leaves her neighbor friend a quiet trail of thoughtful, yet difficult clues to lead him to her new location.
Alice - Lucy from C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" who is the first to stumble upon the enchanting world of Narnia.

  15. March Hare: Rachel Beers from "The First Lady of Fleet Street"
Mad Hatter: Lily from "The Farm" series (actually, almost all the characters ...)
Dormouse: Jeevan Chaudhary from "Station Eleven"
Alice: Kirsten Raymonde from "Station Eleven"

  16. What a fun challenge!

Currently I am reading Last to Die by Tess Gerritsen. I think Anthony Sansone would be the March Hare. The book focuses on his school for exceptional children. He's mad enough to believe in demons (true evil) and I am suspicious of his role in this particular mystery. The Mad Hatter would be Jane Rizzoli, who is fighting the clock to figure out who is responsible for the killings of three childrens' families before these three lone survivors are finally killed themselves. The Dormouse is Julian, or better known as Rat. He is very shy and quiet but extremely intelligent, strong and wise for just a 16 year old. Able to survive in the wilderness on his own, a survivor of a terrible family tragedy, excellent at spotting clues that others would not see, this silent boy would have a fascinating story if he ever decided to tell it. Finally, I see Claire as Alice. She is different from the other children at the school, as she has brain damage from a violent attack. She is the outsider among the other students until the newest arrival shows up and they realize they have too much in common - both being the sole survivors of not one but two family massacres. She goes with the flow because her brain injury makes her impetuous and impulsive and also prevents her from being deceitful or dishonest in any way.

  17. A character as mad as the March Hare I would invite would be Nimona from the book 'Nimona' by Noelle Stevenson. A character fighting time like the Mad Hatter I would invite would be Rosemary from 'Rosemary's Baby' by Ira Levin. A character that is sleepy like the Doormouse I would invite would be Miranda from the book 'White is for Witching' by Helen Oyeyemi. A character that finds themselves out of place like Alice I would invite would be Gert from the comic 'I Hate Fairyland' by Skottie Young.

  21. For this, I'm choosing from Aya (a graphic Novel).
March Hare- Bintou (She's the life of the party and would totally have a party that never ends)
Mad Hatter- Moussa (He'd do anything to try to escape his responsibilities and live free.)
Dormouse- Herve (He's perfect for dormouse, quiet and kind of blah.)
Alice- Aya (She's the only level headed one in her friend group and is perfectly suited to handled her friends' madness.)

  24. Oooh, here we go:

Someone mad enough to host a party with other mad people - How about the adults of Derry, Maine from Stephen King's "IT?"

Someone constantly fighting time - Henry de Tamble from The Time Traveller's Wife

My Dormouse is Luna Lovegood from The Harry Potter books.

Alice is three folks, lysse Mérou, Professor Antelle and Arthur Levain from La Planète des Singes (The Planet of the Apes.)

I feel bad for everyone at this party and would hate to be invited, myself.

  25. March Hare: Grandma Mauzer from the Stephanie Plum books- she tries to get a peek at dead bodies at the funeral home because a viewing should have something to view!
Mad Hatter: Stephanie Plum- at least one of her cars gets destroyed a book
Dormouse: Vaughn from Dirty by Kylie Scott- he's got to have stories to tell from being on the road with a big band
Alice: Lydia from Dirty- she gets a video on her wedding day of the groom-to-be in an uncompromising position with the best man, climbs a fence to escape and ends up in Vaughn's bathtub.

  26. I accept your challenge
And what a challenge is this
    Read on for a comment
    That you just can't miss

    The March Hare, you say
The leader of the group, you mean
    Meira from Snow Like Ashes
Would host a party fit for a queen

    The Mad Hatter's up next
    He's mad as it gets
    Aiden from Illuminae
    With this description he fits

    The Dormouse, so underrated
    Quite invisible, quite brave
Laia from An Ember in the Ashes
    The storytelling slave

    Last but not least
    We have Alice, the hero
No other choice but Katniss Everdeen
Who started it all from zero

At last I think I'm finished
At last I think I'm done

  28. My tea party would be with the characters of the first book I finished during the readathon: The Charm Bracelet by Viola Shipman.

The March Hare: Lolly (the grandmother) who dresses in elaborate wigs and sequined gowns, and does hourly shows for the summer tourists in a resort town.

The Mad Hatter: Arden (the mother) who works for a national on-line magazine and is constantly pushing deadlines, and fighting to stay current in a world that idolizes youth.

The Dormouse: Lauren (the daughter) who hides her own passions and desires in order to please her mother. Once she spends time with The March Hare (her grandmother) and realizes how much fun life could be, she shows off her artistic talent and personality.

Alice: In this production, Alice (or Alex?) is played by Jake, the man who stumbles into this family of women.

The best part of this tea party is that, for all their disparate lives, they are family. And while that drives them each "mad as a March Hare" at times, it also connects them and brings them to the table together.

  29. Hare: Nolan Sorrento from Ready Player One (Ernest Cline) - he's literally crazy and would enjoy forcing people to do something.
Hatter: Yael from Wolf By Wolf (Ryan Graudin) - throughout the novel, she's racing against time to beat her competitors.
Dormouse: Keladry from First Test (Tamora Pierce) - it's stated multiple times how quiet she is "compared to other girls," but her story is SO interesting.
Alice: Etta Spencer from Passenger (Alexandra Bracken) - while she may be in the same world, she's thrown into a lifestyle and ability she didn't know she had, but manages.

  30. March Hare: Hagrid from Harry Potter- I feel like Hagrid is the type to throw a tea party! xD Can't you just picture his giant hands holding a little tea cup?
Mad Hatter: Nina LeDuc from Asylum by Jeanette Beauvoir- Nina is a detective who is trying to solve a serial killer case. She fights the clock in many ways! She has to schedule not only her job but also spending time with her husband and finding time to help babysit his kids from a previous marriage. She also has to fight time with this case because the killer may strike again!
Dormouse: Armin from Attack on Titan (the graphic novel) Armin always underestimates himself and is usually very quiet and shy, but when he does say things its always a witty comment or a really good idea/plan that ends up saving lives!
Alice: Eustace from Narnia- In the Voyage of the Dawn Treader Eustace ends up going to Narnia with his cousins even though he didn't even believe it was real! He is very out of place because he is a nerdy wimpy rude kid at first surrounded by mythical creatures, kings, queens, and warriors!

  32. Effie Trinket~
She's an hysterical character from the trilogy of The Hunger Games she would most likely dress like the characters in the mad tea party scene of Alice In Wonderland she's can be sassy, serious, loving, and giving but most of all crazy.

    Aziraphale and Crowley~
From the book Good Omens the funniest angel and demon ever. They both could either save the tea party or totally trash the place!

    Lestat~
    From The Vampire Chronicles
As his rockstar self. He would be the entertainment!

Doormouse: Ginny Weasley. We don't hear much form her at first, but she is an amazing character (that wasn't given justice in the movies)

Alice: Lucy Peverell from the Chronicles of Narnia. She handles herself well in out of place worlds.

    Alice

  40. March Hare: I'd like to think Voldemort from "Harry Potter" is mad and sadistic enough to host an endless tea party, although it feels a little out of character for him. :P
Mad Hatter: Cinder in "Cinder" because through the whole book she races against time to prevent various things.
Dormouse: Brimstone from "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" because he rarely talks but his words are always wise.
Alice: Tessa Gray from "The Infernal Devices". She finds herself in a world she knows nothing about but she manages to find her place in it.

  43. Since the last book I read was Clockwork Princess, I decided to go with all characters from the The Infernal Devices. (They all fit well, too.)

March Hare – William Herondale. No one really seems to understand him, and he seems completely mad most of the time.
Mad Hatter – James Carstairs. Throughout the entire trilogy his illness is almost killing him.
Dormouse – Sophie. She's the maid, and speaks very little to anyone.
Alice – Tessa Gray. She knows nothing about the Shadowhunter world, but she somehow makes it work.

March Hare: Mad tea lover? Bridget Jones from Bridget Jones's Diary.

Mad Hatter: Constantly fighting time? Henry De Tamble from The Time Traveller's Wife.

Dormoouse: Frankenstein's Monster from Frankenstein. Doesn't get much opportunity to speak, but when he finally does he reveals a compelling side to the story.

Alice: I'd pick Harry Potter -- and I see that's a popular choice.

  45. First, there's the March Hare. Bitsy from Bon Bons to Yoga Pants. She voluntarily is running a weight loss group out of her home.

The Mad Hatter. Moureen Johnson Long from To Sail Beyond the Sunset has found herself in an alternative timeline and is hoping to be rescued before being executed for blasphemy.

The Dormouse. Jake and Audrey in A Year Without Purchase. They are quiet most of the book, but have great stories and insights when their parents ask them about how the year went for them.

Alice. Lazarus Long travels back in time and finds himself arriving 2 years too early (during a war he planned to miss.) Book-To Sail Beyond the Sunset.

  47. Mad Hatter: a litter gender-bending--Madame Defarge, the crazy knitting woman, from a tale of two cities. Self explanatory choice here.
March Hare: Mogget, the cat, from Sabriel. Can you imagine this witty, and somewhat insane, cat paired with with Madame Defarge?? O.o

The Dormouse: Ichirou Nishikawa from Happy Cafe. He literally falls asleep every few minutes unless he has something to eat. He's such a great guy, though, and an amazing chef.

Dormouse: Nathaniel, from the Anita Blake Series by Laurell K. Hamilton. (He starts out very subservient but grows. Yay!)
Alice: Jace Valchek, from the Bloodhound Files by D.D. Barant. (Jace is ripped from her world to another, where humans are a distinct minority.)

  51. March Hare – Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series. She’s just generally mad and kooky.

Mad Hatter – Hermione Granger again from the Harry Potter series. She decided to fight scheduling so hard that she acquired a freaking time turner to get to all her classes.

Doormouse – I have to go with Matilda for this one as she was generally quiet at the beginning of the book, but then becomes kinda badass towards the end.

Alice – Lucy from the Chronicles of Narnia. She sees this whole new world and instead of running scared, she decides to take a chance and have tea with Mr. Tumnus. And it’s quite obvious that throughout the entire series, she’s the one with the deepest connection to Narnia.

  52. March Hare: Evie O'Neil from The Diviners
Mad Hatter: The wicked stepmother queen in Snow White, of course!
Dormouse: Eleanor from Eleanor and Park (can't remember her last name!)
    Alice: Harriet Smith from Emma

  54. Mad Tea Party: My party would consist of

The Hare: Leila from Let's Get Lost- she is just full of life and loves to be carefree and share her joy with others.
Mad Hatter: Wink from Wink Poppy Midnight. She is doing everything she can to create her own story.
Dormouse: Ivy from The May Queen Murders- She is very quite and shy but she does have quite a story to tell.
Alice: Zelda from Romancing the Nerd. She is always out of place where ever she goes.

  55. Ooh I Love this!
I was confused if we're supposed to use books we read today or if we could also use books we read in the past, so I'll do two versions.

From Today (using the book: Lafcadio Hearn’s “The Faceless Ghost & Other Macabre Tales From Japan” by Sean Michael Wilson & Illustrated by Michiru Morikawa):

The March Hare: Yuki-Onna (the Snow Woman)/O-Yuki.

The Mad Hatter: The Man who's executed in "Diplomacy".

    The Dormouse: Hoichi?

Alice: Samebito (a sharkman- no, seriously he's a sea creature that gets briefly expelled from the Kings' court & has to go survive on land. This is such a fitting category.)

    Past Books:
The March Hare who is host of the party: Mayuri Kurotsuchi (*Cringes*) from Bleach by Tite Kubo.

The Mad Hatter: Ithuriel from The Infernal Devices (and the Mortal Instruments) by Cassandra Clare. [I mean they got captured & held captive by a man who's creating a clockwork army, so.....]

The Dormouse: Annie Leonhart from Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama.

Alice: This is the definition of Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach, basically.

    (I'm @burningmoon65 on Twitter, btw.)

  56. March Hare: Arobynn from throne of glass, obviously this man is freaking crazy!!!
Mad Hatter: Aelin from throne of glass, I think everybody know why, she is bad ass and she is always almost surviving and she has lost a lot since she was just a little girl.
Dormouse: Nehemiah from Throne of glass because at first she is lovely and innocent and then you discover a lot of things about her character and a lot of things she has done and known.
Alice: Luna from reign of shadows because she is blind and she doesn’t care, she runs to the unknown.

  57. If fictional characters gather for tea
In the manner of Alice, who shall they be?
To choose from one book is the easiest thing,
So all of my guests are from Lord of the Rings.
Like the March Hare, Gandalf gathers a party
Of characters whose thirst for adventure is hearty.
The Hatter is Aragorn (a name hard to rhyme),
For to aid Middle-Earth, he must race against time.
The Dormouse, though sleepy, has stories to tell,
Just like Bilbo, now dreaming in fair Rivendell.
My Alice is Pippin, who served Denethor
Even without knowing what was in store.
While some of these match-ups have proved quite a strain,
I hope the results will at least entertain!

    Picks are posted here!

  61. March Hare: Professor Trelawney from Harry Potter. Obviously, she'd be trying to read everyone's leaves.
Mad Hatter: Alina Starkov from the Grisha Trilogy. She literally spends all of her time running away from one thing or another. And it might me a personal opinion, but "limited time" is a STRONG feeling I get from this girl. For the record, I haven't read the third book.
Dormouse: This might be an odd choice, but Morpheus from The Sandman. He's a creature of few words, but his story is hella amazing.
Alice: Linh Cinder. If you've read the book, enough said. If you haven't - spoilers!

  62. March Hare: Chrestomanci from Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci novels. He's bossy, he's brilliant, but when he talks about magic while wearing his fancy dressing gowns covered in dragons and or cacti, it gets pretty wild. He would be the ideal mad tea party host.

Mad Hatter: Valancy from Lucy Maud Montgomery's The Blue Castle. Valancy has very little time left but is determined and able to make the most of it.

Dormouse: Noah from Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven Cycle. Noah is very shy and quiet but it turns out he has pretty good reasons for being so.

Alice: September, of course, from Catherynne Valente's Fairyland series. She starts out knowing nothing at all about Fairyland, and every time she thinks she's gotten the hang of it, the rules change. She does all right, though.

This is going to be the absolute best tea party ever. You're welcome.

  66. If I wasn't just trying to read so much, or if the time limit wasnt so small, I would think about characters outside just the one book, but here we go http://wp.me/p3ftwe-Qu

  67. March Hare: HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey is a bit nutty!
Mad Hatter: Hari Seldon from the Foundation series tries to escape the future, but can't!
Dormouse: The sheep from The Big Sheep by Robert Kroese, which starts out quiet, but... well, you'll have to read to find out!
Alice: The characters from the book I'm reading right now who are in an underwater world on a distant planet, but are doing all they can to learn about the aliens there!
